Will important changes be made to the main maritime document?

  • Important changes to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC-2006) were jointly discussed by governments, shipowners, and trade unions.
  •      ***Maritime Labour Convention (eng. Maritime Labour Convention; MLC) — an international treaty, number 186, established in 2006 as the fourth pillar of international maritime law, embodies "all the standards of revised existing international maritime conventions and recommendations, as well as the fundamental principles found in other international labour conventions."

  • According to the first amendment, the competent authority or recognized organization may extend the Maritime Labour Certificate of a ship for a period not exceeding five months if the renewal inspection has been conducted before the expiration of the document, but there is no immediate possibility to deliver it on board. The new one allows the ship to continue operating unimpeded in such cases. The first was important for companies, and the second for maritime trade unions because it directly relates to the health of crew members.

  • This year, a reference to the "Guidelines for Eliminating Harassment and Bullying on Board Ships" was added to the "Regulations on Occupational Accidents, Injuries and Diseases". According to them, governments and shipowners must take measures for more effective protection of seafarers from harassment during voyages.
  • As part of the event, ITF Seafarers' Trust organized a photo exhibition submitted by seafarers from around the world to highlight the significance of their daily work.
  • Among the exhibits is a photograph by Ukrainian seafarer Vadym Mundriyevsky, a member of PRMTU, which became a vivid symbol of Ukraine's presence and voice on an international level.
